New York ICFF

Last week the International Contemporary Fair was held in NYC. There was a buoyancy and upbeat mood that had been missing in previous years. Many of the student designed furniture booths were the most interesting. Also the sustainable furniture being exhibited was, in the words of the New York Times,” playful”.

However the star of the show and the best booth had to be from Heller furniture with their colourful display of the Frank Gehry cubes.

The New York Times has this story today about a great house to rent in Miami complete with brass stripper poles embedded in a long dining room table, and a huge stuffed giraffe-but there is a small legal issue-it’s against the law to rent for one night!

Queensland Flood Property Update

The following perspective is from Don Molloy the Managing Director of the Real Estate Institute of Queensland ( REIQ).

“While it is still too early to tell with any level of certainty what effects the recent Queensland floods will have, we can take some heart from how the market reacted after the 1974 floods.

“The REIQ has researched the Greater Brisbane property sales market and found that within six to 12 months of the January 1974 flooding, demand and prices had returned to levels experienced pre-flood.

“Prior to this year’s flooding, the REIQ was optimistic of better times ahead for the Queensland property market in the second half of this year. This prediction now needs to be reassessed.

“Over the short-term, those properties directly affected by the floods are obviously the most likely to be affected by lower demand and reduced prices.

“But while the next few months may result in a subdued market, and not detracting from the heartache currently being experienced by thousands of homeowners, we need to remember that hundreds of thousands of homes were not affected by the floods which should reassure homeowners and investors that the viability of the Queensland property market remains sound.

“As the rebuilding phase takes shape, and with it much-needed financial stimulus into our economy, the REIQ envisions that the property market will prove as resilient today as it did 37 years ago.”
